The first personal care item I switched on my clean and natural living journey was deodorant. My friend had this little pot from Etsy with coconut oil and lime and I remember trying it out with her back in 2012. Fast forward many years of trial and error, and I can say, I have tried my fair share of deodorants. Always on the hunt for the best non toxic deodorant brands. I have tried liquid roll on alcohol based deodorants, I have tried powders. I have tried creams in pots. I have tried sticks. I have tried gels and tubes. I felt it was time to do a roundup of the best non toxic deodorant brands to try in 2024. Including 25 brands to try! So let’s dive in!

Why Use Natural or Non toxic Deodorant?

I’ve written about this in a previous blog post you can check out here! The short of it, there were some associations of aluminum in conventional antiperspirant/deodorants and breast cancer. So has sprung my aluminum free deodorant obsession, especially with my grandmother having breast cancer. I’m not taking any chances!

Then there are the preservatives and undisclosed fragrances which could contain endocrine disruptors. Thankfully there are tons of natural and non toxic deodorants flooding the market! Great for us crunchy mamas looking for a new non toxic deodorant to try next. Bad for you who just want to know what works, because let’s face it, natural deodorants are not all created equal.

What makes a non toxic deodorant?

Typically I look for a few things when I am choosing a new non toxic deodorant brand:

  • Aluminum free
  • Paraben free
  • Limited ingredient list, using oils and butters and things I recognize like
    • Coconut oil, shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot or corn starches, kaolin clay, tallow, beeswax, essential oils
  • Safe scents – based on essential oils or safe synthetic fragrances and natural extracts
    • Not everyone will agree with synthetics – This is where you can decide your own level of comfort. Do you want to go essential oils only? Or are you okay with safer, phthalate free fragrances as well?
    • Here’s where I come in. I lie in the middle, I’d love to use all essential oils, however, the ones I’ve tried just don’t always work for me.

When looking at the source of the scent

  • If I am looking for the purest, and most natural fragrance, I would stick with just essential oils. I would avoid any product that has “fragrance” on the label without any further information.
  • However, we live on the “clean-ish” side in our home. So that means I am also okay with “safe synthetic fragrances”
    • Not everyone in the clean living space would agree with this, but I think there are definitely safer fragrances
    • I look for Phthalate free fragrance, phthalate free fragrance oils, or safety testing or information on their websites. Also following the International Fragrance Regulatory Association (IFRA) guidelines.
  • Overall, transparency in their fragrance ingredients is ideal!
  • Not everyone considers these synthetic fragrances natural or non toxic. We all have our own threshold of where we draw our lines. I am okay with some non-essential oil fragrances as long as the company is transparent in their sourcing. If you want to stick to non synthetic fragrance, no worries, I gotchu.

Is there a natural deodorant that actually works?

So if you ask my husband, he’d probably say that most non toxic deodorant brands I’ve tried do not work great. I am a sweaty person, it’s true. I also have had 2 babies in the past 3 years, and the hormones be all over the place!

Even the brands that last the longest, I do find I need to reapply on sweaty days. From weather, stress or working out. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to pay for clearer and more natural products for something I use so frequently. Again, my grandmother also had breast cancer. I just won’t risk it.

Don’t worry, as part of this blog post I plan to test out all my favorite brands each day and make Mike do a husband sniff test for you. Stay tuned on IG lol

Tips for transitioning to non toxic deodorant brands:

  • It does take a couple weeks to adjust if you’re transitioning off of aluminum. It really does. You just gotta stick with it.
  • You can use a detox bar that has charcoal and apple cider vinegar. There is one from Kaia Naturals called The Underarm Bar. I’ve used this and I do find it helps
  • If you don’t like a scent, try something else, try different formulations. I like creams and powders best versus the more wet gel like ones.
  • Don’t be afraid to reapply during the day, especially if you’re transitioning from traditional deodorant, or even trying a new brand.
  • If you appear to have sensitivity, check for “sensitive” lines where they are baking soda free.

Sarah’s Top Natural and Non Toxic Deodorant Brands on current rotation:

Ollie & Max Soap Co Mermaid Deodorant

How long it lasts: I find this one can last me nearly an entire day! I just love the Mermaid scent – it’s so fresh and reminds me of the ocean

Formulation/application: comes in a small plastic pot, you have to use your finger to scoop and apply. Applies smoothly once it melts into your finger/armpit

Packaging: plastic pot/jar

Does it stain: never had an issue with staining or getting off of clothes. Will rub on dark clothes ever so slightly as it’s a white cream

Where to buy: Ollie & Max Soap Co website

Schmidt’s Naturals

Schmidt’s Deodorant Rose Vanilla
Schmidt’s Deodorant Open

Per their website they use essential oils and/or blends of plant isolates (sometimes denoted as “natural fragrance” on their labels). They only uses aromatic ingredients which meet the International Organization for Standardization Aromatic Natural Raw Materials standard (ISO 9235).

Ingredients: Magnesium hydroxide, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) oil, Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot) Powder, Butyrospermum Parkii (shea) butter, Caprlic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking soda), Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) wax, Natural fragrance, simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) esters, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Beta-sitosterol, squalene.

How long it lasts: This is lasting me nearly the entire day! I think this is right up there with my Ollie & Max, I have been reaching for my Schmidt’s over all my others recently every day.

Does it pass the husband sniff test at the end of the day: it’s a close one, it’s not terrible

Formulation/application: stick form, creamy, smooth, not sticky

Packaging: plastic stick

Does it stain: so far I haven’t noticed this.

Where to buy: You can get two-packs on Amazon a little cheaper right now. Linking the Rose Vanilla here as that’s my favorite, and also at Target! Target might also carry their sensitive line that is baking soda free.

Salt & Stone

Salt & Stone Black Rose and Oud Deodorant
Salt & Stone deodorant inside

Cost: $20 per 2.6oz stick

Scents: Neroli & Basil, Bergamot & Hinoki, Santal & Vetiver, Black Rose & Oud (I have this one)

Fragrance source: I believe it’s a mix of natural extracts and essential oils. I’m trying to verify this as I thought I had seen more info on their website regarding their fragrance sourcing but now I don’t see anything really on this. Let me reach out!  They do state they are paraben, alcohol and phthalate free so that indicates phthalate free fragrance to me!

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Tapioca Starch, Magnesium Hydroxide, Sodium Bicarbonate, Ozokerite, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate, Spirulina Platensis Extract, Fragrance (Parfum), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Lactobacillus Ferment, Tocopherol, Maltodextrin.

How long it lasts: This one doesn’t last me the whole day. I wore it today as I write this and sweat a lot in my car driving for work and like half way into my day I was a little stinky. I love this on lazy days. I feel I get more longevity out of it but I definitely need to reapply on sweatier/busier days.

Does it pass the husband sniff test at the end of the day: Definitely not

Formulation/application: stick, very smooth application. They also make a gel formulation which I can’t comment on as I haven’t tried it!

Packaging: plastic tube and top, if you twist it up too far the top doesn’t screw back on. They upcycle ocean plastics for their packaging!

Does it stain: not that I can tell so far

Where to buy: Amazon sells their main 3 scents, and the Black Rose & Oud I got on their website or at Citrine Natural Beauty Bar

Madame Lemy

Madame Lemy Deodorant in Rose
Madame Lemy Deodorant inside with puff

Cost: $42 per 2.5oz (regular size) or $22 per 0.75oz (le petit size)

Scents: Rose, Lavender, Lemon, Lime (I have all of them, they are all super light, floral and beautiful)

Fragrance source: essential oils and flower powders for lavender and rose and jasmine and vanilla for the rose, lime and lemon peel powders and essential oils (lemon, lime and bergamot) for the lemon and lime.

Ingredients: This is for the Rose specifically which is what I love most. The only difference is the essential oil/flower extracts used. They also have a baking soda free version as well for the Rose. Himalayan Salt, Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Maranta Arundinacea (Arrowroot), Rose Petal Powder, Rose Flower Oil, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit (Vanilla).

How long it lasts: I wouldn’t say this lasts me all day. I love to reapply this midday especially on heavy sweating days. However, I did wear this predominately all summer while pregnant with Dempsey successfully. I use this as a refresh all the time it’s the perfect light smell

Does it pass the husband sniff test at the end of the day: with a reapply yes, otherwise no

Formulation/application: It’s a powder, and you apply with the cutest fluffy puff! It’s so chic and glamorous I love it! There’s truly nothing like it on the market. It’s supposed to also help absorb moisture and I feel it does help being that it’s a powder formulation. Truly unique.

Packaging: The powder comes in a paper based container with a reusable puff to apply. It’s giving 1920s glam vibes. She also has refills you can buy to continue using your original poof and container forever. She also has minis which are the stinking CUTEST.

Does it stain: it’s a white powder so you should be cautious when applying while wearing black or dark colors. I usually make sure to apply prior to putting on dark clothes or just make sure I press into skin with the poof carefully. Otherwise I don’t really notice this on my clothes. If I get some on my shirt it does come off super easily compared to traditional creamy deodorants. Doesn’t stain anything!

Where to buy: You can actually also snag this on Amazon! Or you can shop at Madame Lemy’s website

Primally Pure

Primally Pure Blue Tansy Deodorant
Primally Pure Deodorant open

Cost: $14-$16 per 1.7oz size, $20-$22 for the 2.5oz size

Scents: Charcoal (my friend Katie loves this one), Blue Tansy (I have this one, but don’t love the smell), Bergamot + Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Vanilla & Citrus (I have this one, like this one best), Lemongrass, Unscented, Tea Tree, and Holiday.

Fragrance source: essential oils only

Ingredients: No aluminum, parabens, fragrance, triclosan, talc, propylene glycol, or anything artificial! This is for the Vanilla & Citrus which is my favorite so far – nArrowroot Powder*, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil*, Tallow from Grass-Fed Cows, Beeswax*, Baking Soda, Non-nano Zinc Oxide, White Kaolin Clay, Essential oils of Wild Orange^, Vanilla* and Sandalwood, Rosemary Extract*, Non-GMO Vitamin E, *Organic, ^Wildcrafted

How long it lasts: I was surprised these lasted as long as they did. I felt I could get nearly a full day out of these but a reapply is sometimes necessary.

Does it pass the husband sniff test at the end of the day: kinda, better than some others

Formulation/application: I found the formulation to be a little tricky. A little goes a long way – don’t over swipe because it can get a little sticky. I found these to be a bit softer, some of the deodorant would build up on the sides after applying. I had to wipe off the treads of the top a lot to get the cap to screw back on. My friend Katie also uses their Charcoal scent and agrees! Also make sure you shave armpits night before applying in the morning otherwise could have some irritation directly after shaving.

Packaging: Plastic Plastic tubes

Does it stain: Yes this can definitely get on clothes. But always comes off with washing, confirmed with my friend Katie – Puracy stain remover takes everything right off.

Where to buy: Primally Pure website

Nez

Cost: $15 per 2.5oz stick, and they also have minis! $20 for 3-pack, $40 for 6-pack, 0.5oz sticks

Scents: They have 3 Bright scents called Workout Sesh (cucumber & leafy greens), Date Ready (bergamot, palo santo, vanilla) and Board Meeting (pear, jasmine, amber), and they come in a bright and smokey blend each – noted by the light gray vs navy blue containers. The Smokey blend versions of each are just that, more masculine and smokier. Workout Sesh (crisp greens, herbaceous sage, creamy musk). – this is nearly a dupe for my husbands favorite Degree that is truly his signature scent. Date Ready (bergamot, black peppercorn, fig and tobacco flower), and Board Meeting (eucaluptus, spearmint, cedarwood). They truly smell more like traditional stronger deodorants, my favorite is Date Ready – it’s more smooth and sultry smelling. Workout Sesh (smokey) is Mike’s favorite, and Board Meeting is almost too much for me.

Fragrance source: Essential oils, synthetic oils and natural extracts. All products are phthalate and paraben free and their fragrance oils abide by International Fragrance Regulatory Association (IFRA) guidelines.  Because these are Phthalate free and they disclose this information, I am okay with this synthetic bit in my products. Because sometimes you just need a deodorant that works!

Ingredients: tapioca starch, caprylic/capric triglyceride, maranta arundinacea root (arrowroot) powder, ozokerite, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, triethyl citrate, magnesium hydroxide, fragrance, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, tocopherol, bentonite clay, cyclodextrin, charcoal powder.

How long it lasts: these last all day, that is for sure. These are the only deodorants that my husband has EVER worn, but it doesn’t always last Mike the whole day.

Does it pass the husband sniff test at the end of the day: Yes! His sometimes doesn’t last him all day though, but it’s the longest lasting one we have tried.

Formulation/application: Stick, smooth

Packaging: plastic stick

Does it stain: I haven’t noticed staining. Maybe a little on my nursing bras but I can’t be sure if it’s from this – I get everything out with my Puracy stain remover anyway!

Where to buy: Nez website is where I order from! Urban Outfitters and Poosh also sell some of them.

AKT London

AKT London – 05 Columbia Road

AKT London Just bought the 05 Columbia Road scent and I am so impressed so far. it is COMPLETELY PLASTIC FREE – has the chicest metal tube and metal key to turn. It smells really nice so far and I’m loving still smelling pretty fresh by the end of the day.

Each and Every

This review is from my friend who is obsessed with Each and Every! Although I haven’t tested these out myself, I have smelled all of them at my friends house. Where to buy: You can snag these right on Amazon! They also have minis you can sample 5 or all 8!

Non toxic deodorant brands that I want to try next and have great reviews!

Brands that use Essential Oil based fragrance only:

Erbaviva I love their products but they are on the earthy side using a lot of essential oils. Not sure if it’ll be my vibe but I love everything they make

Ursa Major – they have both stick and spray deodorants that people rave about. I really want to try one of the sprays but I’m nervous it’s not going to be floral enough

Routine – this one looks amazing I love that they have pots, sticks and minis and TONS OF SCENTS to try. Mainly essential oil based it looks like as well. I think I might have to order a few minis. That’s truly the best way to test them out I love that they have minis!

Piper Wai – Like that this has a refillable option, stick and pot versions, and all essential oils or unscented versions.

Agent Nateur – gets really good reviews and has a floral one I want to try – wildcrafted essential oils only too

Violets are Blue – Another one on Credo – this one is magnesium based without any scents or baking soda. Super intrigued on this one actually because of the magnesium part

Brands that use natural and or safer synthetic fragrance:

Curie Bod – these are safe synthetic fragrances and they blew up after Shark Tank. I gotta test them out there is a lot of hype

Kosas – unique roll on tube that seems to have tons of great benefits

Bite – the metal container and refillable eco-friendly packaging is making me DROOL. I am dying to try the Rose Vert scent and I love the chic packaging.

Hatch Mama – they make high quality mama belly serum as well – would love to try this one!

AKT London Just bought the 05 Columbia Road sent to try I’ll keep you posted! It just came in the mail today and it is COMPLETELY PLASTIC FREE – has the chicest metal tube and metal key to turn. It smells really nice so far and I’m excited to put it to the test! If you’re interested I have a 25% off code for you: AKTSARAHF

Other Non toxic deodorant brands that didn’t work for me, but could be worth a try!

We all have different ways our bodies interact with deodorant and scents and have different preferences than you might! Some people don’t like the pots and prefer sticks, some like tubes, some like purely essential oils. Some are more scrunchy like me, who are okay with essential oils AND safer synthetic fragrance. Some like unscented. You gotta figure out what works for you!  Natural deodorant is all about trial and error – so this list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include them!

Kinfield – I love this brand so much, their sun and bug care is great. This deodorant isn’t floral and long lasting enough for me. I love all the essential oils used as the fragrance though! If you like more earthy/woodsy smelling scents, definitely give it a go, it’s just not for me. Code SARAHFAMASTORY also saves you 15%

Type A: this is a unique tube dispenser and I love how it applied and the concept. But this didn’t last long for me. They have since come out with numerous new scents. They use mostly essential oils and some extracts – very transparent with their ingredients which I love!

Pit Liquor – I had really high hopes for this super unique brand. Developed by a pregnant woman so I knew she was also stanky AF and was desperate. I just couldn’t get the coconut lime to work for me. I also tried another scent too. I felt these just didn’t do anything for me. I love the concept and idea, they come in rollers and sprays and chic glass packaging. I just didn’t have the best experience overall, but I really loved the concept.

Nuud – okay, SO many people LOVE this stuff, but I just can’t seem to make this work for me. I tried, I really did, I gave it a good week or more and I couldn’t get on board. It’s scentless, teeny tiny tube that’s supposed to just neutralize your odor entirely. Not for me sir.

Corpus – this reminds me of the Myro although I think it smells quite nice. It’s more of that clear gel ish style stick deodorant and they make a few other scents that seem promising! This lasts okay for me, not terribly long. They list fragrance on their label but it’s essential oils and isolates specifically.

Kaia Naturals – This brand has so much amazing information on transitioning to natural deodorant. They make a great detox charcoal underarm bar which I have too. I love the smells of their deodorants, but I don’t find they last too long on me.

Little Seed Farm – I tried some samples of this brand and I think they smelled great. I love their ingredients – I have to order the full size and give it more of a longer go. This one gets rave reviews and I LOVE their bamboo applicator and little silicone sleeve for their tiny jars. Not everyone loves jars – but I don’t mind!

Native – I used to think Native was the best. But ultimately it seems like it is just tons of the same scents thrown at you that make you smell worse honestly after a few hours. My friends also had a lot of sensitivity to them. We’ve all since stopped using them. I think there are just better cleaner options available. I do love that they started doing some plastic free packaging though. And in a pinch something easy to pick up at the store, but ultimately no longer a purchase for me.

What is the strongest natural deodorant?

Longest lasting essential oil based deodorant brand:

  • Primally Pure
  • As far as the more pure natural non-synthetic fragrance deodorants go this brand does a phenomenal job!

Longest lasting with synthetic fragrance brand:

  • Nez or AKT London
  • So far the strongest one I have tried is the Nez deodorants. They use synthetic scents to get this lasting power in my opinion. They use a combination of natural extracts, essential oils and safe synthetic fragrances. To me, they smell the closest to more traditional perfume-y style deodorants – think Degree or Secret vibes.
  • I just started also testing AKT London, a UK brand that has the chicest eco-friendly packaging. Their fragrance is packing a punch and might overturn my vote here. I’ll keep you posted!

Which natural deodorant works best?

  • I’ve really been loving Schmidt’s recently. I find I’ve been reaching for it everyday! Despite having it sandwiched between a bunch of others in my bathroom vanity.
  • For super sweaty days, I’m probably grabbing my Nez or recently I’ve tried AKT. These are probably my go to when I know I’m going to sweat! Again, I’m okay being on the scrunchy side here. I’m allowing what I consider safer synthetic phthalate free fragrance in my life.
  • I love Madame Lemy for light activity days, or for a mid day refresh. The powder formulation is truly unique and makes you feel dry.
  • I also always have my Ollie & Max on hand, her fragrance oils tend to last a pretty long time.

What is the best natural deodorant for sensitive skin?

This is hard – Everyone’s skin is different. Even some of the sensitive skin ones I’ve tried, a friend of mine who is super sensitive reacts to. Again, she has only been able to use Each & Every as I talked about above. I would also think Primally Pure would be a great one to try as well. Or stick with some of the unscented/charcoal based products. Baking soda free is also supposed to be for sensitive skin. Keep your eyes out for those versions and read the labels to check!

Final Thoughts

So I have tried a lot of natural and non toxic deodorant brands. And there are still so many I want to try on my quest for the perfect one! Ideally just essential oils and flower extracts etc would be great. However, I am just too stinky in my opinion (and my husband’s lol). I am totally okay with some phthalate free safe synthetic fragrances as long as the company is transparent with it.

What non toxic deodorant brands have you tried and loved? Have you tried any of the ones on this list? Let me know!
