When switching to natural and non toxic cleaning products sometimes it’s hard to find something that disinfects when you really need it. Insert: Force of Nature All-Purpose Cleaner! As a pharmacist I actually think we disinfect too much, I think some germs are good for you and I don’t love stripping good bacteria from our skin. However, there is a time and place for disinfecting, like cleaning up raw chicken that got on your counter or wiping down your 6 month olds’ high chair tray. Force of Nature all purpose cleaning spray checks all the non-toxic cleaning spray boxes and does actually kill off bacteria and viruses when you truly need it. And being that I’m pregnant and have a young toddler at home, it’s again a brand I trust that is safe for me to use while pregnant and around my child. So I wanted to do another pregnancy safe cleaning product review – so here is my Force of Nature Cleaner review!

What is Force of Nature Cleaner?

A non-toxic disinfectant spray! No bleach or alcohol in this one. You can read about the safety of some of the mainstream chemicals in my previous post here.

According to their website, “Force of Nature is an EPA registered hospital-grade disinfectant & sanitizer that kills 99.9% of germs*, including Norovirus, Salmonella, Staph, MRSA, Listeria, Influenza A & Pseudomonas when used as directed on hard non-porous surfaces. The EPA has registered Force of Nature for disinfecting and sanitizing hospitals, ICUs, schools, daycares, veterinary clinics and more. The registration number is #93040-1. To secure federal EPA registration, a product is tested using EPA required anti-microbial testing protocols over multiple lots. Suppliers, purity, concentration & processing of all individual ingredients have to be approved, with strict statistical limits on all.”

What are the Force of Nature ingredients and science behind it?

Salt + vinegar + water + electricity = hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide! Love that it’s a chemical reaction between super basic things that makes it a super powerful cleaner! And best part is you get to do it yourself at home (pharmacist nerd for a sec, so cool!!) 

There are no dyes, fragrances, preservatives, surfactants, bleach, alcohol, quats, hydrogen peroxide or any other harmful chemicals! So it checks all the Sarah Fama safety checkboxes! You can read more about the importance of avoiding fragrances and phthalates in my previous post here!

How does it work?

By electrolyzing the ingredients it turns them into powerful cleaning agents! 

How is Force of Nature All-Purpose Cleaner created?

You get in your starter kit the BPA free reusable spray bottle, the electrolyze device and charger, and the amount of prefilled capsules you choose. Each capsule is then mixed with water per the fill line in the electrolyze device to create a fresh batch of cleaning solution. You just press the button on the device, and let it bubble away for I believe 9 minutes, and then voila, you’ve got a fresh batch of cleaner! They even have a spot for you to put the date on the bottle with marker that washes off. If you want to, you can leave the device plugged in and the light will change when you are due to make a new batch. I usually unplug ours and rely on my spidey senses to look at the bottle date lol.

Why does the cleaner need to be made every 2 weeks?

The Force of Nature cleaning spray needs to be made fresh every 2 weeks to maintain it’s disinfecting properties as the hypochlorous acid dissipates (kind of like bubbles disappearing from seltzer when it goes “flat” or stale!). 

Will you use the entire bottle in 2 weeks?

Honestly, I never use the entire contents of the bottle, I don’t disinfect enough. However, when I disinfected my house earlier today, all the doorknobs, all the tables and eating surfaces, bathroom sinks and toilets etc, I did use more than I thought I would! I imagine I would use a lot more if I were also cleaning baby toys, the highchair among other things I am forgetting that come with a younger baby! I also forgot about the remotes for the TV and the light switches! So if I were disinfecting more often like this I might use the whole thing, but I predominantly reserve for eating surfaces or cleaning up after meal prepping as the primary use day-to-day and big disinfecting from illnesses etc!  

What can you replace with Force of Nature Cleaner?

I personally use this as a Lysol replacement – or any sort of bleach spray. Per their FAQ, It’s as effective as Formula 409 on grease, Windex on glass, Scrubbing Bubbles on soap scum, Febreeze on odors, Resolve on rugs, and bleach for disinfecting. I haven’t used any of these mainstream cleaners in years and years so I can’t comment on direct comparison, but I can tell it works really well on most of these so far!

What are the uses for Force of Nature Cleaner?

It can be used as an all-purpose cleaner, on countertops and tile and windows as well as disinfecting the kitchen, baby toys, portable potty seats, highchairs, etc. It actually does a great job in the kitchen removing grease and grime from the glass stovetop too. I typically reserve disinfecting spray for surfaces that truly need it. Especially after handling raw meat or fish, or after our house gets hit with illness, spritzing down the door knobs and sink handles etc is always on my radar! Force of Nature says you can even use on your hands in a pinch if you can’t wash them as it’s safe, and non-irritating. 

Overall thoughts

I have to say I’m really impressed with Force of Nature cleaner. For my daily wipe down cleaning I don’t usually grab a disinfectant spray, so I never go through the full 12 oz every 2 weeks. But I’ve started to use this more and more especially after cooking and on my glass stovetop because it does such a good job! I primarily use this in the kitchen but the more we go along into potty training the more I’m realizing this would also be great to use on Dempsey’s portable potty seat after using in public toilets and also to clean off her seats in the bathroom more often too! When baby boy arrives this summer I am sure this will also be a great cleaner to have to help clean binkys or toys that go in the mouth often if I can’t wash with soap and water. 

I see now that they also make the perfect sized glass spray bottle, I might switch out my plastic one to the glass one since I prefer glass!

As for the capsules, it says they are a number 5 recyclable plastic. Would it be nice if it were a 1 or 2 so I could recycle them better in my area? Yes. Do I still recycle them? Yes. Same as I do with yogurt containers that are number 5. Would I prefer a non-plastic delivery system for the capsules? Absolutely, however I don’t know if it would be possible since it’s a pre-measured liquid. But I still do feel like this is better than buying an entirely new spray bottle every few weeks or couple months! And the non-toxic benefits and safety profile are what are the biggest takeaways for me.
