Today we’re diving deep into a JOI review – plant based milk concentrates! Isn’t it the worst when your almond milk goes bad in the fridge and then you are left with nothing for your morning coffee or that muffin recipe? I’ve been drinking plant-based milks for a while, I’ve made my own, and tried many different brands. I always end up throwing some out or forgetting about it! Especially when I made it myself, I felt it went bad so quickly!

Insert JOI nut and oat milk concentrates! You get a fresh cup or batch every time you want it, while also saving on packaging and potentially some cost savings as well! I’ve been using them for months now so I feel I have a good sense of these products before doing a full JOI review. So here is my honest JOI review of their nut milk bases and oat milk powder and their creamer!

Straight to the point – do I love JOI?

Yes, yes I do!

Okay so let’s dive in, what is JOI?

JOI is a brand that makes nut milk and oat milk concentrates or bases! This means you buy a jar or a bag, not a container of liquid from the refrigerator section at the grocery store. These are mix-on-demand, make it fresh every time concentrates!

What products does JOI make?

  • Almond milk base
  • Organic Almond milk base
  • Cashew milk base
  • Organic Cashew milk base
  • Organic Hemp milk base (bulk)
  • Organic Oat milk base powder
  • Organic Oat milk powder single serve packets
  • Oat Milk Creamer single serve packets
  • Glass bottles to store your milk in

How do you make JOI milk?

The nut milk bases are made by blending in a high speed blender or nutri-bullet style mixer for up to 30 seconds (I would say I do like 5 seconds!)

The Oat Milk powder you can just scoop a couple spoonfuls into your water and shake or mix, no blender required.

Same with the creamer – you can mix with a frother or stir in!

How do you store JOI milk bases?

Store opened jars and bags in a cool dark place like your pantry.

How long do they last once mixed?

All the milks can be stored into the fridge up to 7 days in an air-tight container (I usually do a mason jar). You will have to always shake well before use – but milks and oat milks, even ones in the grocery store without added oils, will naturally separate. It’s normal!

Isn’t JOI just nut butter?

Kind of! The texture of the Almond and Cashew nut milk bases are much much smoother than your typical nut butters for toast or apples. These are ULTRA smooth and blend into water in merely seconds. The result is a fresh batch of nut milk!

You can also customize the creaminess you like, with 1tbsp to 8oz water as a basic nut milk for smoothies or cereal, or 2 tbsp for creamier nut milk which I prefer for coffee and lattes!

JOI Milk Review

About the brand:

JOI was born from wanting to create high quality nut milk at home, and reducing food and packaging waste. Store bought plant based milks are largely water, so they sought out to “concentrate” on the good stuff!

  • Per their website, since you get more servings per container, you are reducing roughly 85% of packaging waste, and up to 96% with their bulk containers.
  • Clean simple ingredients without gums, fillers, and additives. Naturally long shelf lives, zero refrigeration required.
  • Freedom to make your plant milk whenever you want, how much you want and just the way you want in less than 30 seconds!
  • They source what they can within the US from ingredients to packaging and reducing shipping and carbon footprints.
  • They want to be net zero by the end of 2023 by reducing their carbon footprint and constantly improving their sustainability practices, and hope to be a Certified B Corporation as well!

JOI’s Eco-friendliness

A JOI review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the eco-friendly parts. One jar of almond or cashew milk base can replace 7 quarts of milk if you’re using 1 tbsp per 8oz. If you’re doing typically 2 tbsp per 8oz like I do, you get half the amount of quarts and thus servings go down.

The glass jars are recyclable for the small nut butter containers, and the powders are all packaged in post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

What is the cost of JOI products?

An essential part of this JOI review is the pricing – because they do claim their concentrates will save you money!

  • Almond milk base: $19.99 for 15oz, up to 7 quarts of milk, 27 servings (1TBSP per serving)
  • Organic Almond milk base: $24.99 for 15oz
  • Cashew milk base: $19.99 for 15oz, up to 7 quarts of milk, 27 servings (1TBSP per serving)
  • Organic Cashew milk base: $24.99 for 15oz
  • Instant Organic Oat milk powder bag: $34.99 for 1.42lbs, up to 8 quarts of milk
  • Instant Organic Oat milk – single serve packets: $14.99 / 10 packets
  • Organic Coffee Creamer – single serve packets: $14.99 / 10 packets
  • They also make 8lb bulk containers that are around $120-$150 per container, make a lot of nut milk and have a decent shelf life.
  • They also have tons of bundles and a subscription discount too!

Price to comparable bottled clean milk brand – is it worth it?

I wanted to compare cost per ounce to the other most pure almond milk brands at my local Whole Foods that I typically rotate between, in order to do a proper JOI review.

Let’s start with what they say and some basic liquid measurements and conversions! (Pharmacists nerd out here 🤣).

  • 1 quart = 32 oz
  • 7 quarts is what they say per jar = 224 oz
  • You have 27 tbsp per jar per 8 oz serving of water = 216 oz
  • If you’re doing 2tbsp per 8 oz water then you’re only getting about 13 or so servings per jar, and about 108 oz
  • JOI Almond and Cashew milk (non organic) $19.99 per jar, and the Organic versions are $24.99 per jar
  • Fav bottled clean Almond Milk: Three Trees 28oz bottle $6.79 = $0.24 /oz
  • Comparable clean bottled Almond Milk: Malk 28oz bottle $6.39 = 0.23 /oz
  • JOI almond milk base: $19.99 = $0.09/oz for the 1tbsp method, or $0.18 /oz for the 2 tbsp method in theory.
    • So it would be $5.04 for the comparable 28 oz bottles for my 2 tbsp method or $2.52 / 28 oz bottle with the 1 tbsp method. So in theory, if I did al.this right… It’s a nice cost savings! Even with the 2 tbsp method and having the ability to go from 1 tbsp one day or 2 tbsp another day, you’re still saving on box cartons packaging and money.
    • If you do the math with the Organic JOI milks, it’s nearly he same around $6.47 for the 2 tbsp method which is what I normally do, or it would be just over $3 for the 1 tbsp method.

Almond milk JOI review

  • Ingredients: just almonds!
  • Taste – like plain almond milk! I find 1tbsp to be a little weak and watery for me, I reserve this ratio of 1tbsp to 8oz water for smoothies. I prefer 2tbsp to 8oz for creamier milk.
  • Texture – blends in perfectly with the nutribullet in seconds. Perfectly homogenous and creamy.
  • Mixes well with – coffee, cereal, smoothies, sauces, baking etx- really anything you’d use almond milk for out of a carton you can use this for!
  • What’s my favorite way to use – baking and coffee!
  • Does it froth? Yes because you’re blending in the blender it’s frothy already! When keeping in the fridge for later use and using my Instant Pot frother – it’s not the frothiest but you get a little

Cashew milk JOI review

  • Ingredients: just cashews!
  • Taste – similar to the Almond milk base but slightly sweeter from the cashews. Same as above I prefer 2tbsp to 1tbsp for coffee and lattes!
  • Texture – same as almond milk it blends perfectly.
  • Mixes well with – all the same things as the Almond milk I would use either or for any of the same uses.
  • What’s my favorite way to use – coffee and cereal!
  • Does it froth? Yes because you’re blending it if using fresh, similar to the almond milk performance if you store in fridge and use later – it froths a little bit.

Organic Oat milk JOI review

  • Ingredients: just oats!
  • Taste: tastes like plain oat milk!
  • Texture: although this one is a powder, it does blend so well surprisingly!
  • Key difference between Oat milk and the nut milks: *No blender required* you just pop a couple spoons into a mason jar with a lid or any container and shake!
  • Mixes well with: lattes and smoothies
  • What’s my favorite way to use: mainly lattes!
  • Does it froth? Not as well as the others – doesn’t get blended in blender either but does get some foam when shaking!

Organic Oat Creamer review

JOI Oat milk creamer packets
  • Ingredients: Oats*, Avocado Oil, Soluble Tapioca Fiber, MCT Oil*, Cane Sugar*, Calcium Carbonate, Pectin Fiber. *Certified Organic
  • Nutrition: one packet is 58 calories, 3g fat, 7g carbs and 3g sugar – truly not bad at all here sugar wise I feel you’re getting a quality creamer here without all the artificial junk you can find in many traditional creamers, and no need for refrigeration either.
  • Taste: light and sweet and creamy.
  • Texture: I found the sugar crystals collected at the bottom and it had a more gritty texture or sandy texture although sweet, it doesn’t mix as well in cold liquid (I put in with the JOI milk in the Instant Pot Frother)
  • Mixes well with: coffees or espresso or water first to make more volume instead of directly into coffee
  • What’s my favorite way to use; latte to sweeten and make extra creamy in the frother for my iced lattes or on the go or traveling you could pack with you to have your own healthier option available.

Would I buy again?

After this JOI review and months of testing and pricing comparisons, the simple answer is still… YES!

The Nut milk bases and Oat Milk base:

Yes I definitely plan to always keep a jar on hand and a bag of the oat milk base on hand. It lasts a decent amount of time when you’re in a pinch it’s just so easy to whip some up in seconds instead of going to the store or soaking almonds overnight etc.  Price is comparable or less than what I typically spend on quality simple ingredient nut milks.

*Of note: the nut butters do need to be mixed occasionally so it doesn’t separate or dry out. The Oat milk powder is the most forgiving.

Slightly older jar of JOI Almond milk concentrate

The creamer sticks:

They are nice but I don’t necessarily drink coffee on the go much that isn’t already sweetened by my own homemade syrup or maple syrup so I don’t see myself using these in the future although they are good and help your milk froth a little bit too!

Final thoughts:

love everything I’ve tried from JOI so far. I think the concept can seem perhaps weird to some, but it’s genius to me. I have less milk going down the drain, fresh milk every time I need it, milk in a pinch for recipes and cereal and coffee. Less packaging waste and water use. You can go wrong!
