Before I got pregnant with my daughter, I started taking prenatal vitamins to start preparing my body for pregnancy. I am not great with swallowing large vitamin capsules or tablets – I knew that I would need something chewable, or small, or in gummy form. On my search I came across SmartyPants Prenatal Formula gummy vitamins. I had taken that brand before in the regular adult women formula and was so excited to see they had a prenatal formula. When I got pregnant, I brought the bottle in with me to make sure it had everything I needed and it passed with flying colors. They had also given me samples of other prescription prenatal vitamins but I wasn’t thrilled with them or the extra additives in them. SmartyPants Prenatal Formula gummy vitamins have been a savior for me throughout pregnancy and postpartum and I wanted to share my review with you!

Why SmartyPants Prenatal Formula Gummy Vitamins?
These prenatal gummies have all the things that I would look for in a prenatal vitamin:
DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids (from sustainably caught fish)
Folic acid (as methylfolate, active form, easier to absorb) – prevents neural tube defects
Your essential vitamins like A, D, E, K and B vitamins.
Based on American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommendations, this checks most of the boxes for me.
What are the Ingredients in SmartyPants Prenatal Gummies and what they are formulated WITHOUT:
Outside of the vitamin supplement facts, the inactive ingredients are:
Organic tapioca syrup, organic cane sugar, gelatin, pectin, citric acid, natural flavors, colors added (organic black carrot juice concentrate, organic turmeric), organic sunflower oil, organic carnauba wax.
What they are formulated without:
No synthetic colors, artificial flavors or sweeteners or fillers and allergen-free.
A note on sugar:
Most if not all gummy vitamins contain some sort of sugar. This doesn’t bother me because well, the gummy formulation allows me to take my prenatal vitamins. Many contain Glucose Syrup as the main ingredient. I don’t have the full story on Glucose Syrup versus other syrups, and want to do a little more research for you before giving my final verdict on it. SmartyPants uses Organic Tapioca syrup instead in this gummy vitamin.

What do they taste like and how do you take them?
They come in strawberry banana, lemon and orange flavor gummies. I don’t like strawberry-banana flavor usually, but in these gummies I love all of the flavors! These are the best tasting gummy vitamins ever. They aren’t overly sticky, they don’t have extra sugar coating the outside, they just taste like delicious fruit snacks!
The dose is 4 gummies per day, with or without food. This was also key for me since many vitamin products do need to be taken with food, and with my pregnancy brain/postpartum brain, it is currently and has been a struggle to take them at the same time everyday!

Do the SmartyPants Prenatal Gummies contain Iron?
No – this formula does NOT contain Iron – if you become anemic before or during or after pregnancy, your provider will likely recommend supplementing separately with iron. I had to supplement with iron during my first pregnancy and I am thinking I likely will need to again this time around when I go for more blood work this week.
What I would avoid in other brands of prenatal gummies/vitamins:
Soybean oil
Corn Syrup
Canola Oil or Vegetable Oil
Artificial flavors or dyes
Overall thoughts:
SmartyPants Prenatal Formula Gummy Vitamins check the boxes for me as one of the best prenatal gummies out there. Made with organic sugars and fruits for color and flavor, the basic essential nutrients for pregnancy and postpartum, and in a gummy formulation that I can stomach any time of day, without choking on enormous capsules.
SmartyPants also makes another Prenatal Formula – their Organics – Prenatal Formula which is USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified. It comes in berry flavors and otherwise is essentially the same. I haven’t tried this one yet for flavor comparison!
There are so many great brands out there when it comes to prenatal vitamins – but some of them are SO expensive or require multiple capsules per day, or subscriptions. I love that brands like Needed also have a powder option, but the Omega-3 component is separate and in huge capsule form which isn’t going to work for me.
