Years ago now I switched over my toothpaste from the traditional brands to some more natural and non-toxic toothpaste including fluoride free toothpaste. I’ve tried a few different brands so far, I had been using one brand pretty regularly until my friend had me try her newest obsession: Risewell Toothpaste. At first, I wasn’t sure about it, but it quickly became our new favorite clean hydroxyapatite toothpaste and also fluoride free toothpaste in our home. So let’s dive in to our Risewell toothpaste review!

What is Risewell toothpaste?
Developed by dentists and made in the USA without any of the harmful or harsh ingredients found in traditional toothpastes. They make an adult and kids version of a clean non-toxic hydroxyapatite toothpaste that is fluoride free toothpaste. All of Risewell’s natural oral care products are gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo and made without any animal testing.
This means Risewell toothpaste is made without:
Fluoride
SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate)
Parabens
Propylene Glycol
Artificial dyes
Artificial flavors
Artificial preservatives
What’s the deal with fluoride and why go for fluoride-free toothpaste?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring compound found in soil, rock, and water. It may be present in your water already or added. Back in the early 1900s dentists and researchers noticed that people had less dental caries (cavities) in places where the fluoride levels were relatively higher in drinking water. Years following, many places piloted programs fluoridating the water supply, and saw improvements in public oral health. In 1962, US Public Health officials determined a recommended concentration range of fluoride to be added to water supplies. By 2018, nearly 73% of the US had fluoride in their water whether it was added or naturally occurring. State or local level can decide to add fluoride or not to their local drinking water.
Fluoride when ingested can:
- Be stored in bone and teeth
- Help strengthen teeth to fight tooth decay
However, too much fluoride when ingested can:
- Cause Fluorosis – causes issue with tooth enamel discoloration or surface
- Typically develops in children exposed to too much fluoride in from toothpaste/drinking water/supplements
- Skeletal fluorosis if exposed to high amounts for long period of time
Additional concerns with fluoride:
- CDC recommends that children under 6 use a small, pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste starting at 2 yrs old, spit out the excess paste, and rinse well after brushing.
- If you are a parent of a 2 year old, having them spit out toothpaste is nearly impossible (at least at our house), so opting for a fluoride free option for our daughter seemed like the safest route to go.
- Concerns with fluoride exposure and cancer although no convulsive evidence is out there yet and research is still ongoing according to the American Cancer Society.
- Associations with thyroid dysfunction related to fluoride in drinking water – there seems to be conflicting studies and evidence on this at this time, but something to think about!

What is the hype with the ingredient Hydroxyapatite?
So Hydroxyapatite isn’t new, it’s actually a naturally occurring mineral that already makes up 97% of our tooth enamel. It’s been scientifically proven to protect and strengthen our teeth, similar to fluoride.
- There are studies showing that hydroxyapatite is just as good at remineralizing tooth enamel as fluoride, but is non toxic, and may help support a healthier oral microbiome.
- One study I found here concludes they have the same efficacy, and this one here too.
- Hydroxyapatite has been the gold standard in Japan for over 40 years and has been gaining popularity in Europe as well.
- Hydroxyapatite can not only strengthen enamel, but also whiten teeth and restore any small holes/depressions in the enamel.
- It’s also so safe you can eat it! It’s completely harmless if accidentally ingested, making this not only safe for adults, but also super safe for our young children learning to brush their teeth.
- Risewell actually recommends NOT rinsing with water after brushing to let the hydroxyapatite do its thing!

Our whole family has been loving Risewell Toothpaste well over a year now. We love that there is a kids option, and their toothpaste is safe for the whole family. I love that I don’t need to worry about my 2 year old trying to spit out the excess toothpaste in her mouth, because there is no fluoride. The flavor is great (both the adult and kits versions!) the tubes last a long time, and you can feel good knowing you’re not only using a non-toxic toothpaste, but you’re using a hydroxyapatite toothpaste that is actually scientifically proven to work and backed by dentists!
