On my quest to live a cleaner lifestyle, becoming more eco-friendly and sustainable has become just as important. My husband and I have started a compost in our garden, we try to use as little plastic as possible, and whenever I find a new opportunity to try something more eco-friendly, we go for it. So when I learned about other sources of paper products such as bamboo or recycled paper, I jumped on it. We’ve been using Who Gives a Crap toilet paper for a few years now actually and we have loved it. Their tissues and paper towels we have also tried, but find the eco-friendly toilet paper is our favorite. We started with the Who Gives a Crap recycled toilet paper and then switched over to the bamboo line. I will be honest, it was the aesthetics for me with the beautiful black and white and gold packaging (you’ll see it below), but the benefits of bamboo are huge as well. So let’s dive into the Who Gives a Crap bamboo toilet paper review!

Why Who Gives a Crap Toilet paper?

- Certified B corporation (which is for measuring a company’s entire social and environmental impact)
- Their mission is to donate 50% of their profits to ensure everyone has access to clean water and a toilet within our lifetime. They partner with organizations to provide WASH – water, sanitation and hygiene all over the world.
- Provides eco-friendly toilet paper alternatives to traditional toilet paper and other paper products made from trees.
- Paper goods made from trees contribute to deforestation, which can also affect climate change as we rely on trees for a large portion of our carbon and oxygen exchange homeostasis
- Trees also take a tremendously longer time to grow and replace than bamboo, which can grow up to 3 feet in 24 hours!
- Bamboo doesn’t need to be replanted, it grows from the same root system
- Most paper goods in big box stores are sold wrapped in plastic – brands like Who Gives a Crap wrap their goods in recyclable paper and cardboard packaging.
- Witty and humorous packaging and information on their website!
What is Who Gives a Crap Toilet Paper made of?
They have 2 lines of eco-friendly toilet paper:
- Recycled Paper (recycled materials are sourced locally to their production facilities from schools and office buildings)
- Bamboo Based – made from 100% bamboo, no inks, dyes or scents

Where is Who Gives a Crap Toilet Paper made?
- Bamboo toilet paper is made responsibly in China.
- As of 2023 they now offer domestically made products in the UK and US:
- US – 100% Recycled Toilet Paper
- UK – Forest Friendly Paper Towels and Tissues
- They also provide carbon neutral shipping meaning they pay for carbon offsets that are equal to the carbon they produce so that there are no net carbon emissions into the atmosphere. They work with a company called Pachama on this!
So how’s their bamboo eco-friendly toilet paper stack up?
- The rolls are 370 sheets and 3-ply and very soft
- Come in the cute black and white and gold paper wrapping which looks super cute on display
- It’s biodegradable
- Plays well with most septic tanks per their website
- 48 rolls lasts us as a family of 3 about 6 months (last order I placed was in September 2022 and I plan to reorder this week in March 2023)
- Side note: we also use the Tushy Bidet, so we use significantly less TP on our bums these days so you may go through this faster if you don’t use one! (a review on the Tushy will absolutely be coming soon!)
- 100% money-back guarantee if you don’t love it

How do they make their products white? Do they use bleach?
Per their website:
- The recycled toilet paper is whitened using a combination of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) & Oxygen (O2).
- The bamboo toilet paper is whitened using both Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) and Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).
- Chlorine Dioxide I believe is what is used in “elemental chlorine free” or ECF bleaching similar to many bamboo diapers on the market, and should not result in dioxins and carcinogens being released during the process. I’ll do a bit more diving into this later when I also talk about bamboo diapers. Ideally no chlorine use would be great to avoid any potential contaminants being in the products, and if you’re concerned, the recycled toilet paper is definitely “totally chlorine free” per their statement above.
- As the product itself is something we use frequently but with only such a tiny amount of contact to our skin at a time, I am okay with this whitening process at this time! There are of course other products out there to try that are “unbleached” – I just haven’t tried them yet! And some are actually much more expensive.

What is the price of Who Gives a Crap bamboo toilet paper?
- 24 rolls for $44
- 48 rolls for $68
- They also offer a subscription but I have never been able to calculate how often I need it so I just purchase when I am running low which is about twice per year.
- Include emergency rolls at the bottom of your box as a reminder to reorder asap!
- Compared to some other bamboo companies, including some unbleached ones, this seems to be a reasonable price. I just looked at 2 companies I would absolutely use and wanted to also try, but you would get about 32 rolls or 36 rolls for the same $68-69. That is a big difference!

Overall thoughts on Who Gives a Crap bamboo toilet paper
Our family has really enjoyed using the Who Gives a Crap bamboo toilet paper for a couple years now! It makes me feel better knowing that I am using a more sustainable and eco-friendly toilet paper option compared to conventional brands that contribute to deforestation. The packaging is all recyclable. It is soft on my bum, and also my nose when we run out of tissues lol. The packaging is cute and their slogans and humor is embedded into their marketing and we love it.
We love the bamboo toilet paper best out of everything they make, the recycled is nice but the bamboo I think is better! I’ll have to do a separate review on the tissues and paper towels another time!
